2.3L EcoBoost

Standard on the first three 2021 Ford Explorer models, the 2.3L EcoBoost engine is an inline-four cylinder engine that packs a serious punch. A turbocharger and direct fuel injection help this cast aluminum engine produce up to 300 horsepower for an exciting drive. The 2.3L EcoBoost also includes auto start-stop technology, so you’re not wasting fuel when your vehicle is at a stop light, in line at your favorite drive-through, or if you’re stuck in gridlock traffic.

3.0L EcoBoost

The 2021 Ford Explorer features the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine in the ST and Platinum trims, each with a unique iteration of this powerhouse. In the ST, this engine is enhanced with Ford Performance engine tuning to provide up to 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. In the Platinum, this direct-injection, dual-turbocharged V6 produces 365 horsepower. Constructed of a compacted graphite iron engine block with cast aluminum cylinder heads, this EcoBoost also includes auto start-stop technology to help boost efficiency. The ten-speed automatic transmission paired with both 3.0L EcoBoost engines includes paddle shifters, and intelligent 4WD is standard for better connection and control.

3.3L Hybrid

A robust electric motor pairs with a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery, and naturally-aspirated, direct-injection 3.3L V6 gas engine to create a potent option under the hood of the 2021 Ford Explorer Limited trim to create this engine option. Regenerative braking ensures the drive battery remains charged. You’ll enjoy the best fuel efficiency available for the 2021 Explorer with the hybrid powertrain. But that’s to be expected. In addition, the 2021 Explorer equipped with the 3.3L Hybrid powertrain is the only hybrid large utility vehicle that can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
